What are Demurrage Charges?

Demurrage charges are fees the ocean carrier or terminal bills the importer when a container sits at the terminal beyond the allowed free time. The clock typically starts at discharge or container availability and runs until the box gates out. Demurrage is one of the most common and most preventable cost overruns in ocean freight.
